Clear the Path, Let It Flow
A waterfall doesn’t fight its way downstream—it finds the path of least resistance and cascades naturally from one level to the next.
Your funnel should work the same way. You don’t always need more traffic. Sometimes you just need to remove the boulders blocking the flow. If your form has 12 fields and asks for a fax number, you’ve dammed the river.
CRO isn’t just color changes; it’s clearing debris so visitors can cascade smoothly toward conversion.
How I Optimize
I use data to find what’s blocking the current.
- Heatmaps and Recordings: I use Microsoft Clarity or Hotjar to see exactly where the flow stalls—where users rage-click and drop off the edge. This isn’t guesswork; it’s behavioral evidence.
- The “Grunt Test”: Can a user understand what you do in 3 seconds? Confusion is friction; friction disrupts the cascade. I audit your hero section, value proposition, and CTAs with fresh eyes.
- Form Analytics: Identifying which specific field is the rock that’s diverting your stream. Often it’s one question that kills 40% of completions.
- Page Speed and Core Web Vitals: Slow pages are friction. I audit load times and identify the quick wins that reduce bounce before the user even reads a word.
The Testing Process
Good CRO is disciplined. I don’t change five things at once and hope for the best. We form a hypothesis, build a test, run it to statistical significance, and then decide what to keep.
Testing tools like Google Optimize alternatives (VWO, Optimizely, or even simple feature flags) let us validate changes before committing them to production. Small wins compound over time.
The “Demand Gen” Philosophy
I don’t just optimize for volume. I optimize for the right conversion. A roaring waterfall of 100 unqualified leads is worse than a steady stream of 10 qualified ones—because you just flooded your sales team with noise.
Every test I design accounts for lead quality, not just lead quantity. We look at downstream data: what percentage of conversions actually become pipeline? That’s the number that matters.
